The Division of Renal and Pancreatic Transplant Services at Albany Med specializes in kidney and pancreas transplants to diabetic patients with renal failure. Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) has a long and proud history in transplantation. Our work in transplant services began in February 1965 when DUMC became one of the first institutions in the country to successfully establish a kidney transplant program. Since then, our programs have achieved many more national and regional milestones in the area of transplantation.

 

The Emory Transplant Center is one of the most advanced and comprehensive transplant centers in the Southeast. The Center brings together Emory University's transplantation programs in heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, and islet. The Center is committed to providing and improving care and access to those in need of organ transplantation, through full-service patient care and support services, as well as groundbreaking research to further the field of transplantation.

The Greenebaum Cancer Center has 14 disease treatment and specialty programs, each of which is staffed by experts in treating cancer in a particular system or site in the body (such as the gastrointestinal system) or a particular treatment approach.

Hahnemann has maintained a kidney transplant program since performing one of Philadelphia's first kidney transplants in the mid-1960s. Located in the heart of Philadelphia, Hahnemann University Hospital is a tertiary care institution with a large percentage of beds dedicated to intensive care. This 618-bed teaching facility specializes in cardiac services, heart failure and transplantation, OB/GYN, medical and radiation oncology, bone marrow transplantation, renal dialysis and kidney/pancreas transplantation.


Deciding to have a transplant is a significant event. It is like embarking on a long, challenging journey. Throughout the journey, patients will access a number of facilities. Their primary entry point is the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). The SCCA provides the patient care for patients undergoing treatment through Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

The Henry Ford Transplant Institute is one of the nation’s busiest and most highly regarded transplant centers. It is recognized nationally as a multi-organ transplant center for heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow.

Founded in July 1973, the Transplant Center performed the first kidney transplant in January of 1974. The state-of-the-art Transplant Center provides comprehensive treatment for diseases of the kidney. The Center offers consultations for renal transplantation, vascular access for dialysis patients and general surgery. Additionally, the center provides support for patients and family members at weekly support group meetings. More than 400 patients have received kidney transplants at center.

The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center (UM/JMMC) ranks among the top U.S. medical centers for total solid organ transplantation. Our teams perform over 400 life-saving adult and pediatric transplants each year, including many international patients. The UM/JMMC Transplant Center welcomes all patients needing transplants, regardless of the severity or complexity of an individual’s condition. We offer excellent care from a multidisciplinary team, state-of-the-art treatments, the latest immunosuppressive therapies, and all the resources of South Florida’s largest academic medical center. Support from our transplant team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Johns Hopkins CTS is one of only a few centers nationwide to offer a comprehensive array of transplantation services for adults and pediatric patients. At Johns Hopkins, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer the highest quality of care in kidney/pancreas, liver, lung, heart and bone marrow transplantation.

The Liver Transplant unit at King’s has run an independent programme for adults and children since 1998 and has performed more than 3,000 transplants. It is the largest programme in Europe undertaking over 200 transplants a year.

The Lied Transplant Center, a partnership between the University of Nebraska Medical Center and The Nebraska Medical Center, provides UNMC researchers and provides researchers and multi-disciplinary health care professionals greater opportunities for interaction and collaboration. Transplant programs include liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Small Bowell, Heart, and Blood & Marrow.

LLUMC's Transplantation Institute is a fully comprehensive program that provides services in the areas of liver, heart, kidney, kidney-pancreas, and stem cell in both pediatrics and adults. A core group of health-care professionals is committed to providing excellent management of patients.

In Canada, the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at the London Health Sciences Centre is one of the leading transplant programs, performing about 200 transplants annually. Many types of transplants are done in London, including bone marrow, heart, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver, and multi-visceral transplantation. The rate of organ donation continues to be one of the highest in Canada with 23 donors per million population.

We have a rich history at the Hume-Lee Center and an even brighter future. In 1962, the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals initiated a transplant program which was then one of only three such programs in the nation. While solid organ transplants were a relatively new concept when MCVH first made pioneering advances in the field, recent advances in organ preservation, immunosuppression, patient evaluation, and surgical techniques have led to a marked improvement in the resultsof transplantations. Once risky operations now carry success rates greater than 90 percent.

Innovative procedures and groundbreaking advances make Memorial Hermann's Transplant Center a leader in transplant medicine. Our medical staff physicians performed the first liver transplant in Houston and the first pancreas transplant in Texas, and our Organ Transplant Center participated in groundbreaking studies involving the use of the life-saving immunosuppressive drugs cyclosporine and rapamycin. These drugs are now widely used to ensure the success of organ transplantation. Since 1982, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has been a leader in abdominal organ transplants. The first kidney transplant was a living related donation from father to daughter. Penn State Hershey Medical Center expanded transplant services to include kidney/pancreas and liver transplantation. At Penn State Hershey Medical Center, you will find the largest, most experienced transplant team and support staff in central Pennsylvania. The National Institute of Transplantation is an internationally recognized leader in all scientific areas of organ transplantation including laboratory and clinical research as well as professional and public education. Our Program consists of two transplant hospitals being St Vincent Medical Center in Downtown Los Angeles, and the USC University Hospital located at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine campus also in Los Angeles. Our main effort is at St. Vincent Medical Center where our transplant institute is located. We currently perform over 250 transplants per year, which gives an incredible amount of clinical experience to our fellows.

The Nebraska Medical Center is home to one of the most reputable and well-known organ transplant programs in the country. Through our dedicated efforts in education, research and clinical medicine, we have helped shape the field of transplantation. Our state-of-the-art transplant programs provide comprehensive treatment for diseases of the liver, small intestine, kidney, pancreas, and heart.

The NYU Mary Lea Johnson Richards Organ Transplantation Center, established in New York City in 1989, offers comprehensive liver, pancreas, and kidney transplant services: liver transplants, including live donor liver transplants; kidney transplants, including living donor kidney transplants and laparoscopic kidney transplants; pancreas transplants, including kidney-pancreas transplants.

Founded in 1964, the transplantation program at Northwestern University is the longest-standing transplantation program in the Chicago area. Under the direction of Michael Abecassis, MD, a leader in the field of transplantation, our center has established a national and international reputation for excellence and innovation in patient care and research. With the development of a combined adult and pediatric transplantation program providing services at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital, Northwestern's transplantation program provides kidney, pancreas, simultaneous kidney-pancreas, liver, small intestine, heart, and bone-marrow transplants.

Since its inception in 1984, the Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Center has performed more than 2,700 life-saving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants making it the Gulf South’s leading transplant center. We are the only Center of Excellence in the Gulf South region for liver, kidney and heart transplants, designated by the United Resource Networks.

OU MEDICAL CENTER offers Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas transplants. Both Living Donor Transplantation and Deceased Donor Transplantation are available, as well as the comprehensive evaluation and management of patients both before and after transplant surgery.

When Oregon Health & Science University Hospital surgeons transplanted their 3,000th kidney in December 2000, they stitched another page into our history books. From its first kidney transplant on Oct. 9, 1959, the 18th in the world, the OHSU Transplant Program has expanded to include heart, liver, pancreas, lung and heart-lung transplantation. Through 2006, more than 4,900 organs have been transplanted at OHSU.


The Centura Health Transplant Program, located at Porter Adventist Hospital, has grown quietly since it began in 1986. Over the years, our program has reached many milestones in the area of organ transplantation. In fact, the transplant team of physicians at Centura Health has performed over 700 organ transplants since its inception. For almost two decades now, our patients throughout the Rocky Mountain region have received kidney, combined kidney/pancreas, and liver transplants at our program with exceptional outcomes: both our long-term graft and patient survival rates are some of the highest in the United States.


When a patient’s heart is severely damaged, the best option may be a heart transplant. Rush has one of the region’s most experienced cardiac transplant teams, offering advanced medical and surgical care at every stage of the procedure. Before their heart transplants, Rush patients receive intensive treatment, which may include medications and mechanical pumps that maintain blood circulation until a donor heart becomes available. The transplants are performed by the Rush cardiovascular surgical team, nationally known for its success with high-risk heart surgeries.


St. John Transplant Specialty Center is part of St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Since opening in 1990, patients have been coming to St. John from around the country to gain access to leading-edge technology (such as laparoscopic-live donor nephrectomy) and a compassionate and caring staff. St. John Transplant Specialty Center provides kidney, pancreas and combined kidney/pancreas transplants.


Our transplant teams are comprised of surgeons, medical specialists, nurse coordinators, social workers and ancillary staff members who provide superior specialized expertise in all related services and careful pretransplant monitoring and post-surgical care. Stanford strongly emphasizes continuous quality improvement (CQI) in its transplant programs and maintains comprehensive outpatient management of transplant recipients that includes infection prophylaxis, management of immunosuppression, and long-term patient monitoring and care. The Transplantation Programs at Stanford Hospital & Clinics encompass Kidney and Pancreas, Liver,
Heart, Lung, and Heart/Lung, Blood and Marrow, and a Transplant Diabetes Program.


The University Hospital and Medical Center at Stony Brook provides a unique combination of research, teaching and healing. As part of the State University of New York, University Hospital and Medical Center is not only a teaching hospital/medical school but UHMC is home to the only transplantation program on Long Island. Our Transplant Surgeons have performed over 500 kidney transplants with a success rate that is equal to the best centers in the nation.


The Heart and Lung Treatment and Transplant Center at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital brings together medical treatment, surgery, transplant, and implantable devices to help patients with heart failure and other cardiovascular problems. Established in 1982, the transplant program at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is one of the most experienced, successful programs in the world. Its surgeons have performed more than 1,000 transplant procedures.


The physicians and surgeons at St. Luke's Center for Liver Disease have unmatched experience in treating patients with all forms of liver disease - and are experts in handling all facets of care, ranging from screening for abnormal liver function to liver transplantation. Our liver transplant unit boasts an exceptional team of surgeons, nurses and coordinators. They have performed more than 150 liver transplants since the unit's inception.


Nationally recognized, the Texas Transplant Institute provides comprehensive medical care through the entire transplantation process. The UC Davis Transplant Center performs solid-organ transplants of the kidney, kidney-pancreas, isolated pancreas and liver, continually seeking to improve quality of life for transplant patients and to advance transplant technology through research.

The Heart Failure/Cardiac Transplantation Program at the UCSD Medical Center is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to working with both community and University based physicians to provide the most beneficial, state-of-the-art, yet cost-effective medical care for patients with heart failure.

The UCLA transplant programs have maintained a remarkably cohesive surgical, medical and support staff, which forms an experienced and committed team to face the challenges of organ transplantation. Physicians in many subspecialties act as consultants to the transplant programs, and their breadth of experience enhances the clinical success of all of the transplant programs at UCLA. Transplants include Bone Marrow/Stem Cell, Kidney, Pancreas, Heart, Lung, Liver, and Intestine.

For almost two decades, the University of Colorado Hospital’s Multi-Organ Transplant Program has been performing heart, kidney, kidney/pancreas, liver, lung and heart/lung transplants to save lives. Today, the program is among the five largest in the country and is one of the only programs of its kind in the Rocky Mountain region. Our team is known internationally for providing the finest transplant care and maintaining some of the highest outcome records in the nation.

The Transplant Center at Shands Jacksonville is the only transplant unit in North Florida specializing exclusively in kidney transplants. Having performed the first organ transplant in Jacksonville in 1989, the center has completed over 700 kidney transplants and is recognized throughout the state and the region for its comprehensive care of patients with renal disease.


The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Organ Transplantation Program is multi-organ and multidisciplinary and, in addition to the transplant surgeons, includes members of the Department of Internal Medicine who are specialists in nephrology, hepatology, immunology, infectious diseases, cardiology, pulmonology, and a variety of clinical subspecialties. Transplantation programs include kidney, pancreas and liver.


The UK HealthCare Transplant Center has been providing transplantation services since 1964. Our surgeons now perform over 130 transplants each year. The faculty and staff of the Transplant Center specialize in the transplantation of all major solid organs, including the heart, lung, kidney, pancreas and liver.


The University of Maryland Division of Transplantation is one of the nation's largest transplant programs, with an established national reputation for innovation and technical/surgical excellence.

With the tremendous improvements in transplant management, most patients with kidney failure can be considered for transplantation. We perform more than 300 kidney transplants per year and have one of the nation's largest kidney transplant programs.

Transplants have been occurring at the University of Michigan Transplant Center since the first transplant in Michigan was performed here in 1964. We perform approximately 425 transplants annually, making us the largest and most experienced transplant center in Michigan - and among the largest in the nation.
Since the first transplant in Michigan took place at the University of Michigan back in 1964, more than 7,109 patients have benefited from our devotion to the individual Transplants include heart, kidney, lung, liver and pancreas.

The Transplant Center at University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview is nationally recognized for its contribution to pediatric transplantation. We have a long history of research devoted to improving results for pediatric patients and have performed more pediatric kidney transplants with greater success than any other program in the world. We specialize in dialyzing infants and small children as they await kidney transplant. Doctors here developed an innovative technique for transplanting adult kidneys in infants. Our 1-year patient and graft survival rate is more than 95 percent.

The Transplant Surgery Section is responsible for the kidney transplants and kidney pancreas transplants at the OU Health Sciences Center. In addition the transplant team is involved in the care of cardiac and liver transplant recipients.

The Penn Transplant Center is the largest multi-organ transplant center in the region as well as ranking in the top 10 centers in the nation. Penn transplants all solid organs and is a pioneer in islet cell transplantation.

UPMC's transplant programs are internationally renowned for their far-reaching influence on the entire field of transplantation. Since 1981, the year transplant pioneer Thomas Starzl, MD, PhD, performed the first liver transplant in Pittsburgh, more than 12,000 transplants have been performed at UPMC Presbyterian and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, distinguishing UPMC as the largest transplant center in the world.

The Liver Transplant Surgery Program and Center for Liver Disease at the University of Southern California consists of personnel who specialize in the following hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures: Live Donor Liver Transplant: Replacement of a diseased liver due to chronic liver failure, acute liver failure or tumors within the liver. The diseased liver is replaced with a segment of liver from a healthy human donor (usually a relative or close friend).
 
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Transplant Division has performed over 2000 transplants since the organ transplant program began in 1970. The early years, under the leadership of Dr. Louis G. Britt, the kidney transplant program forged the way for Bowld Hospital to become a premier institution for the postoperative care of transplant recipients. The year 1982 opened the gateway for UT Memphis to become one of the first three programs in the U.S. to offer liver transplantation under the expert guidance of Dr. Santiago Vera. The expansion of the UT, Memphis program in the past decade can be attributed to the leadership of Dr. Osama Gaber as well as the UT Bowld Hospital's commitment to excellent care. UT, Memphis now offers kidney-pancreas in addition to kidney and liver transplantation for both the adult and pediatric population.

Renal transplantation services are the backbone of the Division’s efforts at Memorial Hermann Hospital and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. From its inception in 1977 to the present, the Division has performed over 4,000 renal and/or pancreas transplants. Over the past three decades, The Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation has been at the forefront of research investigating new immunosuppressants.


For more than three decades, University Health System and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have been a pioneering force in organ transplantation. All patients referred to our program benefit from our strong foundation in research, education, state-of-the-art facilities and surgical excellence. We are the San Antonio and South Texas leader in: Adult and Pediatric Liver Transplant—including living liver donation, split liver procedures, Adult and Pediatric Kidney Transplant—including living kidney donation and Adult Lung Transplant.

The mission of the Multiorgan Transplant Program at the University of Toronto is to develop a center of the highest clinical excellence and academic quality for patient care, research, and education in the field of immunology and transplantation. The program is founded on the belief that multidisciplinary collaboration and effective communication among team members will support continuous development and quality improvement. Transplants include liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, lung and bone marrow.

UVa's transplant programs provide adult and pediatric transplants for kidney, pancreas, liver, and in 2003, islet cell transplants. In addition, the UVA Health System offers heart and lung transplants. The programs include a full service tissue typing lab and specialized nursing units staffed by skilled nursing professionals who care for transplant patients before and after surgery.

When considering the short 50-year history of clinical organ transplantation in the United States, Vanderbilt University Medical Center has made significant contributions. Vanderbilt performed its very first kidney transplant in 1962 by Dr. H. William Scott and Dr. Charles Zukoski the same year the first successful non-twin transplant occurred at the Brigham and Women's Hospital by Dr. Joseph Murray. Over the course of the past 45 years, Vanderbilt Transplant Center has performed more than 7,000 transplants including all solid organs and stem cell.
